Abstract (Abstrak)

ABSTRAK INDAH ASLINDA. Pemanfaatan Minyak Atsiri Dalam Pengendalian Pertumbuhan Tumbuhan Tingkat Rendah Pada Struktur Dinding Benteng Rotterdam Makassar” (dibimbing oleh Khadijah Thahir Muda dan Yadi Mulyadi). Benteng Rotterdam merupakan salah satu cagar budaya penting di Indonesia yang menghadapi ancaman kerusakan akibat faktor biologis, khususnya pertumbuhan tumbuhan tingkat rendah seperti lumut dan mikroorganisme pada permukaan dinding. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji mekanisme tumbuhan tingkat rendah dalam memengaruhi kerusakan struktur Benteng Rotterdam sekaligus mengevaluasi efektivitas penggunaan minyak atsiri sebagai bahan pengendali pertumbuhan lumut. Metode penelitian yang digunakan meliputi observasi lapangan pada area dinding yang ditumbuhi lumut, identifikasi tumbuhan tingkat rendah berdasarkan karakteristik morfologi dan habitatnya, dokumentasi visual, studi pustaka, serta analisis hubungan antara pertumbuhan organisme tersebut dengan kondisi fisik material batu dan bata, didukung oleh analisis laboratorium terhadap sampel lumut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tumbuhan tingkat rendah berperan dalam proses pelapukan biologis dan biodeteriorasi melalui pembentukan lapisan mikroorganisme, retensi kelembaban, penetrasi ke dalam pori-pori material, serta produksi senyawa organik yang mempercepat degradasi permukaan batu dan bata, sekaligus menciptakan kondisi mikroklimat lembap yang mendukung perkembangan mikroorganisme lain. Aplikasi minyak atsiri pada permukaan dinding yang telah dibersihkan terbukti mampu menekan pertumbuhan lumut secara signifikan, ditandai dengan perubahan warna, penurunan vitalitas, dan terlepasnya koloni lumut dari substrat, tanpa menimbulkan dampak merugikan terhadap material dinding maupun lingkungan sekitar. Penelitian ini memberikan pemahaman ilmiah mengenai peran faktor biologis dalam kerusakan dinding dan menunjukkan bahwa minyak atsiri berpotensi menjadi alternatif pengendalian lumut yang efektif, efisien, aman, dan ramah lingkungan sebagai bagian dari strategi konservasi berkelanjutan Benteng Rotterdam Makassar di lingkungan tropis lembap. Rotterdam Fortress is one of Indonesia's important cultural heritage sites facing the threat of damage due to biological factors, particularly the growth of low-level plants such as moss and microorganisms on the surface of the walls. This study aims to examine the mechanism of low-level plants in affecting the structural damage of Rotterdam Fortress while evaluating the effectiveness of using essential oils as a moss growth control agent. The research methods used included field observations of moss-covered wall areas, identification of low-level plants based on their morphological characteristics and habitats, visual documentation, literature studies, and analysis of the relationship between the growth of these organisms and the physical condition of stone and brick materials, supported by laboratory analysis of moss samples. The results showed that low-level plants play a role in biological weathering and biodeterioration through the formation of a layer of microorganisms, moisture retention, penetration into the pores of the material, and the production of organic compounds that accelerate the degradation of the surface of stone and brick, while creating a humid microclimate that supports the growth of other microorganisms. The application of essential oils on cleaned wall surfaces has been proven to significantly suppress moss growth, as indicated by changes in color, decreased vitality, and the detachment of moss colonies from the substrate, without causing any adverse effects on wall materials or the surrounding environment. This study provides scientific insight into the role of biological factors in wall deterioration and demonstrates that essential oils have the potential to be an effective, efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly alternative for moss control as part of a sustainable conservation strategy for the Rotterdam Fortress in Makassar in a humid tropical environment.
