Abstract (Abstrak)
WARDATUL JANNAH Morphological Interference of the Makassar Language in the Arabic Used by Students at An-Nuriyah Bontocini Islamic Boarding School (Supervised by Zuhriah, S.S., M.Hum.). Background. Language, as a tool of communication, should be clearly understood by the interlocutor. However, in the process of second language acquisition, linguistic errors are often found, one of which is caused by mother tongue interference. This phenomenon occurs among students at the An-Nuriyah Bontocini Islamic Boarding School in their use of Arabic, such as in the utterance (ko اين). The influence of the Makassar language as their mother tongue causes students to experience difficulties in accurately applying Arabic morphological rules. Objective. This study aims to examine the forms of Makassar language morphological interference in the Arabic spoken by students at An-Nuriyah Bontocini Islamic Boarding School and to analyze the factors causing such interference. Method. This research utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques included the observation method (simak) via recording and note-taking, interviews, and documentation. Descriptive analysis was used to process the data through three stages: 1) Data reduction; 2) Data display; and 3) Verification and conclusion drawing. Results. The results indicate 229 instances of morphological interference, categorized into three main forms: word patterns with 73 instances (31%), affixation with 139 instances (60%), and reduplication with 17 instances (7%). The contributing factors include the strong influence of the Makassar language, limited vocabulary mastery, a lack of understanding of Arabic morphological rules, and a lack of proper practice and an immersive Arabic-speaking environment within the boarding school. Conclusion. Morphological interference occurs due to the structural differences between the Makassar language—which does not distinguish between gender and number—and Arabic, which is highly inflectional. This results in errors regarding persona, gender, tense, number, and passive forms in the students' use of Arabic.
