Abstract (Abstrak)
This study examines the pragmatic analysis of humorous utterances in the Wicked movie (2024). Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes how the main characters, Glinda and Elphaba, generate humor based on two research questions: (1) the flouting of Grice’s (1975) Conversational Maxim, and (2) the utilization of Searle’s (1976) Speech Acts. The analysis of 35 dialogue extracts for the first research question found that all four Maxims were flouted, with the Maxim of Manner (12 extracts) and the Maxim of Quality (11 extracts) being the most dominant. The Maxim of Relevance (8 extracts) and Quantity (4 extracts) were also significant. Glinda was identified as the predominant flouter (27 extracts) and Elphaba the least (8 extracts). The analysis of 25 dialogue extracts for the second research question revealed the distribution of Illocutionary Acts: Expressive acts (13 extracts) were the most frequent, followed by Directives (5 extracts), Assertive (4 extracts), Commissive (2 extracts), and Declaration (1 extract). Glinda was again identified as the dominant user (19 extracts) while Elphaba produced fewer (6 extracts). The findings conclude that pragmatic analysis, specifically the intentional flouting of Quality and Manner to perform Expressive speech acts, are fundamental to the creation of these humorous utterances and delineating the contrasting humorous utterances of Glinda (performative, vain) and Elphaba (cynical, defensive). This research demonstrates the effectiveness of applying a combined Gricean and Searlean framework to cinematic dialogue.
