Politeness Strategies in Egalitarian and Hierarchical Communities on British and Sorowako Culture (Supervised by Abdul Hakim Yassi and Harlinah Sahib) This study critically examines the significant impact of social structure on the manifestation of linguistic politeness by systematically contrasting two culturally distinct cultural domains: British and Sorowako (South Sulawesi, Indonesia). The main goal was to go beyond traditional cross-cultural comparison and put the hypothesis that the structural power factor (P-factor) is the main predictor of strategic choice to the test, with cultural serving as an important scalling mechanism. The study employed a mixed-method research design, conducting quantitative content analysis on 1,524 sub-strategies across four distinct contexts (Egalitarian British/EB, Hierarchical British/HB, Egalitarian Sorowako/ES, and Hierarchical Sorowako/HS) subsequently followed by qualitative pragmatic discourse interpretation. The result validates the hypothesis: Social structure determined the functional constrain, creating two universal cluster: egalitarian context consistently align with the Positive Face (PF) cluster (Solidarity-Building), while hierarchical context universally require the Negative Face (NF) cluster (Distance-Maintaining). The analysis shows that culture is an important factor that changes this structural effect: the cultural value of hormat (respect) makes NF principally stronger in HS context, which leads to the most common use of explicit deference sub-strategies (give deference, apologizing). On the other hand, rukun (harmony) lessens PF in the ES context, making it necessary to use off-record strategies (be vague/hedge) even with friends. The study concludes that the P-factor governs the strategic functional constrain (solidarity or distance), whereas particular cultural moral codes influence the ultimate linguistic executions and intensity. Tujuan utama adalah melampaui perbandingan lintas budaya tradisional dan menguji hipotesis bahwa faktor kekuatan struktural (faktor-P) adalah prediktor utama pilihan strategis, dengan budaya berfungsi sebagai mekanisme penskalaan yang penting. Studi ini menggunakan desain penelitian campuran, melakukan analisis konten kuantitatif pada 1.524 sub-strategi di empat konteks berbeda (Egaliter British/EB, Hierarkis British/HB, Egaliter Sorowako/ES, dan Hierarkis Sorowako/HS) yang kemudian dilanjutkan dengan interpretasi wacana pragmatis kualitatif. Hasilnya memvalidasi hipotesis: Struktur sosial menentukan batasan fungsional, menciptakan dua kelompok universal: konteks egaliter secara konsisten selaras dengan kluster Wajah Positive (WP) (Membangun Solidaritas), sementara konteks hierarkis secara universal memerlukan kelompok Wajah Negatif (WN) (Pemeliharaan Jarak). Analisis menunjukkan bahwa budaya adalah faktor penting yang mengubah efek struktural ini: nilai budaya hormat (respek) membuat prinsip WP lebih kuat dalam konteks HS, yang mengarah pada penggunaan sub-strategi penghormatan eksplisit yang paling umum(memberi penghormatan, meminta maaf). Di sisi lain, rukun (harmoni) mengurangi WP dalam konteks ES, sehingga perlu menggunakan strategi off-record (bersikap samar/berhati-hati) bahkan dengan teman. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa faktor P mengatur kendala fungsional strategis (solidaritas atau jarak), sedangkan kode moral budaya tertentu mempengaruhi eksekusi dan intensitas linguistik akhir. Ini menawarkan peningkatan empiris yang substansial pada teori kesantunan dengan menggabungkan dinamika struktural universal dengan kode moral budaya lokal.
