Abstract (Abstrak)

NURUL ANISA MUTHMAINNAH MUCHLIS. Figurative Language in Narrative Song “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” by Taylor Swift: Semantic Analysis. (Supervised by Harlinah Sahib and Ainun Fatimah). Background. Figurative language in song lyrics is a rhetorical device that conveys deeper meaning and makes the song unique. However, this device can make it difficult for some people to understand. Aim. This study aimed to identify figurative language in the lyrics of Taylor Swift's song "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" and analyze its meaning. Method. This study employed qualitative descriptive methods to analyze the data. The writer used Perrine’s (1963) theory to classify the figurative language and Leech’s (1981) seven types of meaning theory to interpret the meaning. This study collected data from the official lyrical website, namely Genius.com. Result. The findings revealed 36 data points across nine types of figurative language: (5) simile, (6) metaphor, (6) hyperbole, (8) personification, (3) symbol, (1) paradox, (1) synecdoche, (4) irony, and (2) metonymy. Based on the findings, various types of meaning are conveyed through figurative language, including connotative, social, collocative, reflected, and affective meanings. Most of the figurative language in the song conveys connotative and affective meaning to express the narrator’s feelings and illustrates the secondary meaning of the words. Conclusion. This song is rich in figurative language, which creates a dramatic feel and leaves a unique impression on listeners. Overall, the lyrics of this song describe a past relationship that is difficult to forget for the narrator.
