Abstract (Abstrak)

AGUNG MANDALIKA BARULA. Strategies and Deviations in English-Indonesian Translation (Dubbing) of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Movie (supervised by Noer Jihad Saleh and Ayub Khan) Background. English-language films are widely popular in Indonesia, leading to a strong need for effective dubbing translation. As dubbing replaces the original audio with translated speech, it requires accuracy and cultural adaptation. Aim. This study aims to identify the dubbing strategies and examine the translation deviations in the Indonesian dubbed version of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movie. Method. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach supported by library research to gather data from the movie. Key segments of the script were selected through purposive sampling based on their relevance to the analysis. The data were examined using Gottlieb’s AVT strategies and Newmark’s framework of translation deviations. Results. The analysis reveals that 9 out of 10 of Gottlieb’s strategies are applied, with transfer being the most frequently used and decimation the least. The most common deviations found involve sentence structure shifts and grammatical or lexical inaccuracies. Conclusion. The dubbing of the film shows careful effort to balance accurate meaning with audiovisual demands, making the dialogue sound natural and emotionally fitting for Indonesian audiences, even with some adjustments to the source material.
