Abstract (Abstrak)
Background. Universally, marriage has multiple perspectives of meaning. Each individual has a different interpretation through their own lens of perception. Analysis of Sylvia Plath's poems mostly used feminism and literary psychology approaches. However, studies on Plath’s constructed view as a poet on marriage as part of a society remain limited. Aim. This thesis assesses the meaning of the figurative language and the representation of the author's worldview in confessional poem, filled with personal experiences and awareness of the surrounding environment: the foundation for a perspective of reality. Method. This thesis applies a descriptive-qualitative method and adopts Genetic Structuralism as its theoretical framework. The data consists of several selected poems, arranged chronologically and systematically related to the theme of marriage. Results. The analysis shows that the five poems contain various types of figurative language: the first poem has 22 figurative languages, the second poem has 37 figurative languages, the third poem has 18 figurative languages, the fourth poem has 41 figurative languages, and the last poem has 21 figurative languages. The emergent worldview of marriage constantly shows marriage as an institution under society with patriarchal and objectifying tendencies. Conclusions. Plath’s confessional poetry both exposed her bitter life as a woman and a self-expression as the poet that represent the collectiveness.
Keywords: autobiographical poetry; genetic structuralism; institution of marriage; literary perspective.
