Abstract (Abstrak)

Husnul Khatimah. Exploring the Role of Text Elements and Visual Modes in Comprehending Scientific Articles Based on Multimodality Theory (supervised by Nasmilah and Karmila Mokoginta) The objectives of this research are to analyze (1) how text elements and visual modes contribute to strengthening the clarity of messages in selected scientific articles, and (2) how these elements affect readers’ comprehension based on multimodality theory. The study employed a mixed-methods approach that integrated qualitative content analysis (QCA) and quantitative analysis. The qualitative component involved QCA to examine the relationship between text and visual modes in scientific articles. A total of 15 articles were analyzed to ensure a comprehensive examination of multimodal elements in scientific communication. The research instruments included interviews and comprehension tests. The findings demonstrate that effective integration of text elements and visual modes plays a crucial role in enhancing the clarity of academic writing. When visuals such as tables, figures, and diagrams are well-placed, clearly labeled, and appropriately referenced in the surrounding text, they contribute to a more coherent and comprehensible message. The study also provides strong evidence that visual–textual integration significantly improves reader comprehension. Quantitative results from comprehension tests revealed a decline in performance, with the mean score decreasing from 77.2 in Test A to 63.4 in Test B. Similarly, the median score dropped from 84.0 to 64.0, indicating that most students performed less effectively on Test B. These findings suggest that Test A facilitated better understanding, likely because it included both text and visuals that worked in combination to support learning.
