Abstract (Abstrak)
This study explores the psychological dimensions of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, focusing specifically on the effects of depression experienced by the central characters, Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Warren Smith. Utilizing Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, particularly the concepts of the id, ego, and superego, the research investigates how internal conflicts and past traumatic experiences shape the characters’ mental states and behaviors. The objectives of this study are formulated as following as follows; 1) To reveal the personality aspects of the main characters in the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, and 2) To explain the things that form the personality traits of depression in the main character in the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf from the perspective of literary psychology. The analysis reveals that both characters exhibit signs of psychological distress, with Septimus representing the overt consequences of war-induced trauma and Clarissa embodying the subtler, internalized struggles of societal expectation and personal dissatisfaction. By applying a literary psychoanalytic approach, the study highlights the profound interconnection between mental illness and narrative form in Woolf’s modernist fiction. The findings aim to contribute to the broader discourse on psychological representation in literature and enhance understanding of mental health awareness through literary analysis.
