Abstract (Abstrak)
The need for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is increasing, particularly as venous access for patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) who require hemodialysis. A cost-effective, simple, and non-invasive intervention is needed to optimize AVF maturation. This study investigates the effectiveness of hand exercises in patients undergoing AVF maturation. The study was conducted in April 2022 at Wahidin Sudirohusodo Central Hospital, Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Subjects included adults aged 18 years and older with CRF undergoing hemodialysis who had undergone AV shunting. Medical records were retrieved to complete the data. Vein-to-skin distance, vein diameter, and venous flow were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Data were statistically analyzed using the paired t-test/Wilcoxon test and the independent t-test/Mann-Whitney U test to assess the significance of differences between the two groups. A total of 18 subjects participated in the study and were equally divided into two groups. In all observed parameters, statistical analysis revealed that the differences between the two groups were not statistically significant. However, dumbbell exercises tended to show greater improvements in several parameters compared to softball exercises. As the findings are still inconclusive, studies of a similar nature with a larger sample size are recommended to confirm the results, taking into account other factors such as exercise intensity and duration.
