Abstract (Abstrak)

Parenting patterns are an important aspect in building children's character from an early age. Based on this, this study aims to reveal the types of parenting patterns applied by three families in Anne Brontë's novel Agnes Grey, as well as how these patterns influence the character development of their children. This study uses a structuralism approach focused on analyzing intrinsic elements such as characters, plot, setting, and theme to identify parenting patterns and their influences. The method applied is qualitative descriptive, with Agnes Grey as the primary data source. The results of the study show that there are four parenting patterns identified in the novel, namely authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful parenting, which are applied differently by the three families, namely the Bloomfield, Murray, and Grey families. The Bloomfield family applies a predominantly permissive parenting style, characterized by excessive pampering, which results in children who are stubborn, unruly, and lack empathy. The Murray family exhibits a combination of permissive and authoritarian parenting from the mother and neglectful from the father, leading to children who grow up with emotional imbalance, lack of empathy, and a tendency to prioritize social status over moral values. In contrast, the Grey family adopted an authoritative parenting style that balanced affection and firmness, resulting in children who were independent, empathetic, and of high moral character. These findings confirm that parenting patterns have a significant influence on the formation of children's character and serve as an important reflection for parents in determining the appropriate parenting style.
