Abstract (Abstrak)

Background. Vocabulary mastery is fundamental to English language learning, playing a crucial role in speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills. However, observations revealed that fifth-grade students at SDN 121 Inpres Kalabbirang struggled with vocabulary acquisition due to using unengaging teaching methods. Aims. This study examines the effectiveness of animation videos in enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery and exploring their interest in learning vocabulary through this medium. Method. The research employed a mixed-methods approach using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. Quantitative data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, while qualitative data were obtained via student response questionnaires. The sample consisted of all 21 fifth-grade students. The vocabulary topics, fruits, animals, body parts, school supplies, and others, were delivered through animation videos over 12 sessions. Results. The analysis showed an increase in the average score from 43.10 in the pre-test to 87.86 in the post-test. The t-test value of 31.97 far exceeded the critical value of 1.725, indicating a significant difference between the results before and after treatment. Additionally, the questionnaire results revealed that most students responded positively, felt more interested and active, and found it easier to understand vocabulary through animation videos. Conclusion. Thus, using animation videos has proven effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery and enhancing their interest in learning English.
