Perjuangan Humphrey Van Weyden untuk mencapai aktualisasi diri dalam novel The Sea Wolf karya Jack London = Humphrey Van Weyden Journeys of Self-Actualization in Jack London’s The Sea Wolf

This research aims to explore the psychological development of the main character, Humphrey Van Weyden, in The Sea Wolf by Jack London, by examining his journey to self-actualization through the framework of Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This study is qualitative descriptive research which applied a structuralism approach to analyzes the intrinsic elements of the novel especially characterization—while highlighting how each level of Maslow’s hierarchy is reflected in the protagonist’s transformation. The analysis also focused on how Humphrey’s interactions with other characters, Humphrey’s journey toward self-actualization is significantly shaped by his interaction with those around him aboard the Ghost. His initial conflict with Thomas Mugridge the cook, challenges his emotional stability and forces him to adapt to a harsh new environment. His complex relationship with Wolf Larsen drives his intellectual, emotional and physical growth. Most notably, his bond with Maud Brewster sparks emotional maturity, awakens his instinct to protect, and lead him to embrace responsibility and independence. These interactions act as catalyst either challenging or nurturing his personal development and allow him to move progressively through the levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, ultimately reaching self-actualization.
