Abstract (Abstrak)
This study analyzes the relationship between humans and nature in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Lost World. The analysis examines how the interaction between humans and nature is depicted and the ecological themes and messages conveyed through this depiction. The study employs Greg Garrard's ecocriticism approach and a descriptive qualitative research method. The results show that, in The Lost World, Doyle depicts the relationship as complex, tense, and meaningful. Nature is portrayed as both an amazing, mysterious space and a dangerous force that challenges humans. The novel's explorers demonstrate great courage and curiosity while exploring the harsh, unfamiliar wilderness, yet they also face conflicts that test their abilities and attitudes, ranging from the threat of prehistoric creatures to interactions with indigenous tribes defending their territory. Through this portrayal, Doyle shows humanity's awe of nature and critiques humanity's tendency to exploit and dominate the environment. Themes such as wilderness, animals, and dwelling, which are raised in the novel, enrich our understanding of how humans position themselves and other creatures within a complex ecosystem. The Lost World conveys a powerful moral and ecological message, inviting readers to reflect on the importance of humility and respect for the majestic and complex forces of nature. And also profound critique of human ego, particularly in terms of domination over nature.
