Abstract (Abstrak)

Nuraila Islamiyah. An Analysis of Word Formation Processes and Communicative Functions of English Slang Used by Generation Z (Supervised by Abdul Hakim Yassi and Husain Hasyim) Background. English slang particularly used by Generation Z is widely known for its creativity, humour, and casual tone. In digital spaces, slang terms are constantly innovated and formed through unique morphological processes that carry specific communicative purposes. The formation and the function of these slang terms may be fully understood by examining the linguistic mechanism behind them and the social intentions they serve. Aim. The aims of this study are to (1) analyze word formation processes found of English slang used by Generation Z, and (2) explain the communicative functions served by those slang terms. Method. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of 30 slang terms purposively selected from various online platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram. The study applied a morphological approach based on Yule’s (2010) theory to identify the word formation types, and categorized the communicative functions using Allan and Burridge (2006)’s framework. The data were collected through documentation and analyzed using three steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Results. The findings shows that the most frequent word formation process in this study is Acronyms (23.33%), followed by Clipping (16.67%), Blending (13.33%), Compounding (13.33%), and Derivation (13.33%). Coinage, Borrowing and Multiple Processes each occur at 6.67%. As for the communicative functions, the dominant category is To Express Impression (76.67%), while the remaining functions such as To address, To Show Intimacy, To Form Intimate Atmosphere, To Reveal Anger, and To Humiliate appear with lower frequency. Conclusion. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that slang use by Generation Z is heavily influence by digital communication culture, with strong preference for morphological creativity or innovation and expressive function.
