Abstract (Abstrak)
NURANNISA. Buginese Culture Performed in The Movie Tarung Sarung: A Semiological Analysis (supervised by Harlinah Sahib and Simon Sitoto). Background: This research raises the theme of culture because by understanding culture, the preservation of culture can be further maintained, and movies are a medium that greatly helps in the understanding and exploration of culture. Aims: The study aims to identify the cultural signs and explore the cultural values of the Buginese people represented in the movie Tarung Sarung by using a semiological approach. Method: Drawing from the theories of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes, the study analyzes how meaning is constructed through the relationship between the signifier (the physical form of the sign) and the signified (the conceptual meaning behind it), along with denotative and connotative interpretations. Ten selected scenes were examined to reveal embedded cultural elements. Result: For example, the traditional duel of Tarung Sarung functions as the signifier, while the signified is Sigajang Laleng Lipa, a Buginese tradition that symbolizes justice and chivalry. Similarly, the doi’ menre’ custom is signified through a marriage proposal scene, reflecting familial honor. The Paraga performance signifies community identity and pride through attire and dance, while Mappalette’ Bola illustrates the collective spirit and mutual cooperation. Other signifiers such as Barongko cake, headscarves, and dialogue express deeper cultural values including siri’ (self-worth), lempu’ (honesty), warani (courage), sipakatau (mutual respect), and gotong royong (solidarity). Conclusion: Thus, the film Tarung Sarung does not merely entertain but also functions as a cultural text that preserves and communicates the values of Buginese heritage.
