Abstract (Abstrak)
Background. Prevalence of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD) in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) population tends to be high with more than 50% of cases. Some studies have demonstrated that Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) and Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP) both showed an association with NAFLD due to their reflection of insulin resistance and excessive lipid accumulation. As these conditions also happen in T2DM, VAI and LAP are anticipated to be potential biomarkers for early detection of NAFLD. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether VAI and LAP have association with NAFLD in Type 2 DM patients Methods. This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted on patients aged 18 years and older with Type 2 DM in Wahidin Sudirohusodo hospital, Makassar. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Additionally, the Chi-square test was applied to determine the odds ratio after categorizing the values of VAI and LAP into tertiles. Results. Data analysis was performed on 117 subjects, consist of 72 with NAFLD and 45 without NALFD. Comparative analysis using value of VAI and LAP of each group shows significant difference with p-value 0.027 for VAI and 0.010 for LAP. Based on tertile, it was found that VAI ≥ 3,8 had odd-ratio 3.051 as well as LAP ≥ 82,33 also has same result. Conclusion. Higher value of VAI and LAP in Type 2 DM patients is associated with NAFLD with 3.051 times greater risk in VAI ≥ 3,8 as well as LAP ≥ 82,33
