Abstract (Abstrak)

Kurniawan Maulana. English Literature Students' Taboo Words in The TV Series The Boys: A Pragmatic Study (supervised by Kamsinah and Simon Sitoto ) Background. Television series, indeed, much of contemporary media, are not simply sources of amusement for audiences. They often deploy taboo language and explore sensitive themes that function as complex social signifiers, open to multiple interpretations, especially when viewers do not fully grasp the specific pragmatic context or the intended communicative force behind their use. Aim. The aims of the study are to (1) analyze the types of taboo words uttered by characters in The Boys series, and (2) to explain the functions of using taboo words in The Boys series. Method. This study used mixed methods: descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. In this case, the author clearly described the facts of taboo words such as type and function based on data from selected episodes of the TV series "The Boys". The study employed a pragmatic approach, combining the frameworks of Batistella and Azzaro. The data collection technique in this study involved episode selection, transcription, and note-taking and coding. The researcher also employed simak and catat techniques. The analysis technique had three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Results. The results of the analysis showed that there were 217 instances of taboo words identified in the selected episodes. In datum 1 in a state of intense anger, Hughie’s emphatic use of the religiously-derived term “hell” to strengthen a command is classified as profanity. This usage also functions as swearing, as he employs the word to express extreme frustration and make his demand more forceful. Obscenity was the dominant type (50.23%, 109 instances), followed by Vulgarity (26.73%, 58 instances), Epithet (12.44%, 27 instances), and Profanity (10.60%, 23 instances). These types of taboo words were analyzed based on Batistella's (2005) framework. The dominant function of these taboo words, based on Azzaro's (2005) theory, was Swearing (70.83%, 168 instances), with Insult being the secondary function (29.17%, 49 instances). Conclusion. Based on these findings, the author could conclude that the series "The Boys" frequently uses obscenity for expressive swearing.
