Abstract (Abstrak)
Muhammad Alief Rahman Fardillah. Nominalization In Muhammad Ali His Life And Times Biography Book: A Systemic Functional Grammar Analysis. (supervised by Simon Sitoto and Ainun Fatimah). Background. This study investigates the lexical density, grammatical complexity, and use of nominalizations in Thomas Hauser’s biography of Muhammad Ali. The study reviews how Hauser’s grammatical and lexical choices contribute to the representation of Muhammad Ali’s worldview, identity, and ideological stance. Objective. This study aims to uncover the extent to which ideational metaphor and nominalization shape the formal tone and abstract meaning of the text. Additionally, it aims to uncover the degree to which the written text in Hauser’s biography demonstrates the text grammatical complexity and lexical density. Method. This study used a qualitative-quantitative research method based on Systemic Functional Linguistics as proposed by Halliday (1985). The data were taken from selected text in Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times (1991), focusing on segments that reflect Ali’s personal beliefs, public life, and historical impact. The lexical density was calculated by identifying the number of lexical items per clause, while nominalizations and ideational metaphors were analyzed in terms of their structure and meaning transformation. Result. The study shows that the texts from Hauser’s biography consistently exhibit high lexical density, with values ranging from 4.23 to 5.6. High lexical density is found in sections describing Ali’s influence and achievements, reflecting the author’s tendency to pack dense information into fewer clauses. Conclusion. This study concludes that nominalization and ideational metaphor reinforce the lexical density, formal tone, and philosophical meaning of the text by generalizing personal experiences into broader social, spiritual, or ideological concepts. Further research is recommended to explore similar linguistic patterns in other biographical or historical texts, as well as their impact on readers’ perceptions of public figures.
