MUH. ASRUL. THE DENOTATIVE AND CONNOTATIVE MEANINGS OF MOBILE LEGENDS CHARACTER’S UTTERANCE: A SEMIOLOGY STUDY (supervised by Sukmawaty and Simon Sitoto). Background. This research examines the use of language in online gaming, specifically in Mobile Legends, where language serves not only as a means of communication but also as a tool for building character identity and influencing player emotions. With the increasing popularity of this game, it is essential to understand the meanings behind character quotes that are often overlooked by players. Aim. The study aims to explore the denotative and connotative meanings of characters’ utteraces in Mobile Legends, as well as uncover the layers of emotion and history that shape these characters. Method. The methodology employed in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing semiological analysis based on Roland Barthes' theory. Results. The results show that each character utterance has a denotative meaning, which is the literal or real meaning, and a connotative meaning, which reflects broader cultural and ideological values. Conclusion. The research concludes that understanding the meanings behind character dialogues can enhance the gaming experience and players' connection to the narrative within the game, providing deeper insights into the interaction between language, narrative, and culture in the context of gaming.
