Abstract (Abstrak)

Background. Song lyrics and music videos are not just entertainment for people. They often contain implicit meanings like signs that can lead to multiple interpretations, especially when listeners and viewers do not understand the context. Aim. This study aims to describe how signifiers and signifieds are implied in the song lyrics and music video of The Girl That I Used to Be by Raisa Andriana. Method. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a library research to collect the data from the song lyrics and the music video. Purposive samples were used to select key parts of the music video that are relevant to the analysis. The data were analyzed using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiology theory to examine the signifiers and signified in the song lyrics and the visual signs in the music video. Results. The researcher identified sixteen signifiers and signified, with six in the song lyrics and ten in the music video. Through the signs in the lyrics, Raisa expresses nostalgia for her past and the emotional struggle to embrace her new identity as a mother. The music video reinforces these themes through visual signs. It illustrates the emotional connection between her past and present self and how she can accept the changes. Conclusion. The song successfully reveals the meaning of two big themes in both the lyrics and visuals. The first theme is the transition to the role of motherhood, and the second theme is self-acceptance when facing life’s changes.
