ABSTRACT TIARA PERMADANI. The Image of Women in the Novel Mirah dari Banda by Hanna Rambe (supervised by Inriati Lewa and St. Nursa’adah). Background. The portrayal of indigenous female characters in this study reveals a contrast with the image of women commonly depicted in literary works during the colonial period. Aim. This research aims to describe the image of indigenous women and to analyze the role of setting elements in shaping that image. Method. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using A. Teeuw’s structural approach to identify intrinsic elements, particularly character and setting. Results. The findings show that the female character in this novel possesses an attractive physical appearance, often becoming the object of attention from both male and female characters, as well as a strong psychological image—independent, resilient, and not easily influenced by colonial or patriarchal domination. Additionally, the setting of the Banda Islands during the colonial era plays a significant role in shaping the character and struggles of the main protagonist. Keywords: image of women, novel, structuralism.
