Abstract (Abstrak)

This study analyzes the types and functions of slang used in the movie Snack Shack. by applying sociolinguistic theories, particularly the framework proposed by Mihalicek and Wilson (2011) regarding types of slang and Zhou & Fan, 2013 for its social functions. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing content analysis to systematically identify and interpret the slang expressions found in the movie dialogue. The findings reveal two types of slang: common slang (9 examples), which is widely understood and used in everyday conversations, and in-group slang (15 examples), which is more exclusive to specific social groups. In terms of function, slang primarily serves as a means of expressing emotions (11 examples), highlighting its role in conveying characters’ feelings and attitudes. Additionally, slang is used to achieve politeness (7 examples) and assert self-identity (6 examples), reflecting social bonds and group membership. The study suggests that future research could examine the evolution of slang across different movie genres and explore the cultural impact on slang variations. Moreover, a comparative analysis between movie slang and real-life slang could offer deeper insights into language transformation. For English learners, films can serve as an effective medium for learning slang, but proper contextual usage is essential to avoid misunderstandings. Understanding the functions of slang can enhance communication skills, particularly in informal settings and specific social groups.
