PENGARUH PEMBERIAN TERAPI ADJUVAN KURKUMIN TERHADAP PERBAIKAN GEJALA KLINIS DAN PENURUNAN KADAR IL-6 PADA PASIEN SKIZOFRENIA = The Effect Of Adjuvant Curcumin Therapy On Improving Clinical Symptoms And Reducing IL-6 Levels In Schizophrenia Patients

Introduction: Nutraceutical products are commonly used as adjuncts to treatment in neuropsychiatric disorders. Indications for such use include supplementing medications for symptom relief, reducing side effects, and enhancing cognitive function. Aim: To determine the effect of administering curcumin as adjuvant therapy on reducing IL-6 levels and improving clinical symptoms in schizophrenia patients. Methods: This study uses an experimental research design to measure pre and post- tests with random assessment. This study was conducted at the Dadi Regional Special Hospital (RSKD) in South Sulawesi Province. The number of samples was 22 patients each in the intervention and control groups. The instruments in this study include informed consent forms, DSM-V instruments, clinical symptom instruments such as the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS), atypical antipsychotic monotherapy or combination antipsychotics, turmeric capsules, blood sample collection kits and IL-6 level tests , and ELISA kits. Data processing was carried out after recording the research instruments using the SPSS 24.0 computer program and Microsoft Excel. Result: The correlation between the decrease in IL-6 levels (baseline and week 8) with changes in total PANSS (baseline and week 8) in the intervention group was not significant (p> 0.05) with weak correlation strength. The correlation between the decrease in IL-6 levels (baseline and week 8) with changes in total PANSS (baseline and week 8) in the control group was not significant (p> 0.05) with moderate correlation strength. Conclusion: Supplementation of curcumin adjuvant for 8 weeks can improve clinical symptoms better than without supplementation of curcumin adjuvant. The response rate of changes in interleukin-6 levels was better in supplementation of curcumin adjuvant compared to without supplementation of curcumin adjuvant.
