Abstract (Abstrak)
EMAD. Denialism in Video Game: Semiotic Analysis of Silent Hill 2 (supervised by Simon Sitoto and Kamsinah) This study aims to (1) expose the nuance of denialism embedded in the Silent Hill 2 narrative and (2) determine the presentation of denialism aspects in Silent Hill 2. This research used a descriptive qualitative method, using 11 data taken from the Silent Hill 2 game that shows signs of denial that occurred. The writer collected the data by playing the game and watching walkthrough gameplay to find the sample, understanding the comments from the developer, capturing the scene, and classifying the data in chronological order. The writer began by analyzing the data based on Barthes’s framework of denotation and connotation, and identifying the semiotic analysis result which the data fit Gillespie’s defensive tactics of disruptive meanings. The writer focuses on the James Sunderland which is the protagonist of the game. By applying Barthes’ framework, this research revealed the complexities of James’ emotional landscape, illustrating how his desire for forgiveness and atonement is often overshadowed by the weight of his remorse. There are 6 types of defensive tactics: 7 defensive tactics of rationalizing, 2 defensive tactics of fudging, 1 defensive tactic of dichotomizing, 1 defensive tactic of denial, 1 defensive tactic of splitting, and 1 defensive tactic of ignoring. The reason why James employs these defensive tactics, as mechanisms to shield himself from the overwhelming guilt, grief, and emotional turmoil caused by Mary’s illness and James’ act of murder.
