Abstract (Abstrak)

The border diplomacy dispute related to illegal immigration from Mexico has become a significant issue in the bilateral relations between the United States and Mexico. The increasing number of illegal immigrants entering the U.S. from Mexico has driven significant changes in U.S. immigration policy, which in turn has affected the dynamics of the relationship between the two countries. The leadership of Donald Trump and Joe Biden introduced two different approaches to addressing this issue. The Trump administration, which took office in 2017, implemented more restrictive policies and stricter law enforcement against illegal immigrants. In contrast, the Biden administration, which began in 2021, adopted a more humanitarian approach and the protection of human rights. This study aims to analyze the comparison of border diplomacy applied by both administrations and assess the impact of these policies on diplomatic relations between the United States and Mexico. The research method employed is a qualitative approach with literature study techniques. The concepts used to compare the Trump and Biden administrations' responses to illegal immigration from Mexico are national security and border diplomacy. The findings of the study show that, although both administrations share similar goals in reducing illegal immigration, the differences in policy approaches have generated dynamics in the diplomatic relations between the two countries and have influenced bilateral cooperation in border management, economics, as well as regional political and security stability.
