Abstract (Abstrak)

This study investigates the learning strategies employed by students of the English Department at Hasanuddin University to improve their speaking skills. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with 60 students from the 2021 batch. The research aims to identify the most frequently used strategies and the factors influencing students' choices. Findings reveal that students commonly utilize cognitive, metacognitive, memory, compensation, affective, and social strategies. Among these, memory strategies, such as note-taking and repetition, are the most frequently employed. The study highlights the role of peer interactions, self-practice, and media exposure in enhancing speaking proficiency. Additionally, students’ confidence levels and exposure to English-speaking environments significantly influence their strategy selection. These insights contribute to a better understanding of language learning strategies and provide recommendations for educators to optimize speaking skill development in English language learners.
