Derajat Perbandingan dalam Adjektiva Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Massenrempulu: Analisis Kontrastif = Degrees of Comparisons in English and Massenrempulu Adjectives: A Contrastive Analysis

This research compares English and Massenrempulu adjectives in terms of degrees of comparison. The research aimed to describe the process of forming degrees of comparisons in English and Massenrempulu adjectives and to explain the differences and similarities in degrees of comparisons in English and Massenrempulu adjectives. The research was conducted using descriptive qualitative research. In collecting data, the researcher applied note-taking and interviews. The English degrees of comparison data were collected from English grammar pdf books, article journals, and films. Conversely, the degrees of comparisons in the Massenrempulu data were collected from the native speakers’ translation of degrees of comparisons from Indonesia to Massenrempulu. The result showed significant differences and similarities between how English and Massenrempulu adjectives were formed in degrees of comparison. While in English, there are affixations, -er, -est, modifiers; more and most, irregular forms, and linking verbs, in Massenrempulu, there are pronoun clitics: -aq, -kuq, -ko, -mu, -i, -na, -ta, -kiq, modifiers; pada, laqbi, kaminang and gaja, and adjectives functioning as an independent predicate. English relies on word order and syntactic clarity. On the other hand, the Massenrempulu allows flexibility in adjective placement. Nevertheless, both languages share the same basic forms for positive, comparative, and superlative degrees; modifiers are used for emphasis; and markers appear, which are than in English and na in the Massenrempulu language to provide the comparative relationship.
