Abstract (Abstrak)

Toni Morrison's Beloved (1987) explores the impact of slavery on individuals and society. This study examines how the novel portrays slavery’s atrocities and how its narrative structure reflects 19th-century American social conditions. This study explores Toni Morrison's Beloved (1987), focusing on its portrayal of slavery’s atrocities and the reflection of 19th-century American social conditions through its narrative structure. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology and Lucien Goldmann's Genetic Structuralism, the research analyzes primary data from the novel alongside secondary sources. Findings reveal that Morrison depicts slavery through three main aspects: 1) the persistent trauma of slavery as shown through characters like Sethe and Paul D. endure haunting memories and unresolved pain, mirrored in the novel’s fragmented structure, symbolizing the lasting psychological scars of slavery and broader societal disarray, 2) the degradation of dignity which shown by how slavery eroded identity and self-worth, particularly through Paul D.’s struggles with emasculation and the dehumanizing exploitation of enslaved individuals. and 3) The impact on family dynamics as the novel highlights slavery’s destruction of familial bonds, exemplified by Sethe’s tragic infanticide and the exploitation of enslaved women. The novel’s mirrors the fragmented identities and social conditions of enslaved individuals. Beloved serves as a critical reflection on the psychological scars and social impact of slavery which provides larger insights into historical injustices and their lasting effects.
