Abstract (Abstrak)
Background: Stunting remains a significant problem in Indonesia. Although recent decade the Indonesian government have made significance progress in reducing the prevalence, it remains high according to the World Health Organization. Low birth weight (LBW) is one of the most prominent risk factors for stunting. Several studies in Indonesia have been conducted but few assessed the prematurity and intrauterine growth status determine LBW. Objectives: To analyze the association between LBW and stunting in children 6–36 months and the prematurity and intrauterine growth status determine LBW. Methods: This research is an observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The population were children with history of birth at DR. Wahididn Sudirohusodo hospital from January 2021-June 2023. Length/height and weight measurements collected, and parent interviews for additional data. The association between LBW, prematurity, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and nutritional status was investigated by calculating adjusted odd-ratio (OR) using Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel and binary logistic regression models. Results: The prevalence of stunting was higher in children with LBW than normal birth weight (NBW) (19,5 vs 2,3). Children with LBW had significantly increased risk for stunting with OR 11.34 (95%CI 1.3-99.21). Likewise, FGR and small for gestational age are more likely to be stunting than those without FGR or born prematurely (OR 9,33, 95%CI 1,67-52,06 and OR 12,5, 95% CI 1.76-88.74). Conclusion: This study confirmed the results of previous study that LBW is a significant risk factor for stunting in children. The child born FGR has a higher chance of stunting compared to prematurity.
