Pragmatic Study on Flouting Maxim Found in the Utterances by The Main Characters in Me Before You Movie = Pragmatic Study on Flouting Maxim Found in the Utterances by The Main Characters in Me Before You Movie

The aims of the research are: (1) to find out the types of flouting maxim used by the main characters of Me Before You movie, (2) to describe the implied meaning in the flouting maxim done by the main characters of Me Before You movie, and (3) to explain the reasons why the main characters of Me Before You movie flout the maxims. This research used descriptive qualitative method to classify and analyze the utterances. The writer applied the theory from Paul Grice (1975) known as Gricean theory. The results of this research show that there are 14 flouting maxim data found in Me Before You movie. The types of flouting maxim are: 1) flouting maxim of quantity (1), 2) flouting maxim of quality (1), 3) flouting maxims of relevance (8), and 4) flouting maxims of manner (4). The implied meaning found in this research are the character having a belief, trying to joke, asking someone to do something, wanting someone to do something, not wanting someone to do something, not wanting to talk, not wanting to respond, not wanting to hear anybody, apologizing, not getting used to do an act, expecting someone to do something, and letting someone do something. Meanwhile, reasons the characters flout the maxim are to: share information, create humor, end the conversation, order someone to do something, avoid answering questions, avoid discussing something, change the subject, apologize, emphasize something, replace certain words, get a help, have a small talk, and one another reason is because the characters confuse to give answer.
