Abstract (Abstrak)

Zalzadila Desy Sadina. 2024. Analysis of Conflict Among Women Characters in Jane Austen’s Persuasion. (Supervised by Burhanuddin Arafah and Andi Inayah Soraya) This study aims to look at the problem of conflict that occurs between women characters contained in Jane Austen's novel entitled Persuasion. This study uses structuralism theory by focusing on the characters and characterization of the main characters in the novel. By using structuralism theory, this thesis analyzes how the conflict between Anne, who struggles to maintain her moral values and personal integrity, with Elizabeth, Mary, Louisa, and Lady Russell, illustrates the tension between social norms and individual aspirations. Elizabeth and Mary Musgrove show egoism and materialism, while Louisa Musgrove shows passion and often ends in an impulsive attitude. Lady Russell, as an authority figure and advisor, plays an important role in influencing Anne's decisions and emphasizing the existing social structure. The results of this study reveal several conflicts between female characters. This conflict is divided into internal conflict and external conflict. Conflicts such as rationality, emotion, attachment, freedom, social norms against individual desires form a fundamental conflict framework. Through analysis of the characters' language and actions, this study shows how patriarchal social structures create limited gender roles and trigger conflicts between Anne Elliot, Elizabeth Elliot, Lady Russell and several other female characters.
