Abstract (Abstrak)

The risk of death is higher if the KMK baby is accompanied by prematurity. Intrauterine growth is considered to have an important role in the occurrence of premature birth and KMK, so many recent studies are trying to find out what can support intrauterine growth. Zinc is an important micronutrient for organ development and growth. Zinc plays a role in DNA synthesis and the IGF-1 receptor signaling pathway. Umbilical cord blood serum zinc levels can reflect intrauterine zinc status, indicating maternal zinc supply to the fetus. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between umbilical cord blood serum zinc levels and intrauterine growth status in premature babies. This research is an observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The sample for this study was 85 premature babies consisting of 53 babies with SMK and 32 babies with KMK. Umbilical cord blood samples were collected immediately after birth and zinc levels were determined using the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. The results of the study showed that the median cord blood serum zinc levels in the KMK and SMK groups were 41.87 µg/dl (20.43 – 56.04 µg/dl), and 52.12 µg/dl (35.54 – 62 respectively). .46 µg/dl) and the difference between the two groups was found statistically. The correlation test shows that there is a strong positive correlation. This study concluded that there was a relationship between umbilical cord blood serum zinc levels and the intrauterine growth status of premature babies.
