Abstract (Abstrak)
Molecular marker analysis have become important in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, and may in fact reveal new mechanisms in breast cancer pathogenesis. Aside of the commonly used hormonal receptors and HER2, VEGF-A is increasingly shown to be important in breast cancer diagnosis and pathogenesis. We seek to elucidate the relationship between VEGF-A expression and breast cancer characteristics, including molecular markers. The St. Gallen concensus of 2013 further groups breast cancers according to these molecular subtypes into the luminal, HER-2 overexpressed, and basal-like I TNBC subtypes. Luminal subtypes show a strong expression of hormone receptors, TNBC and based-like subtype tend to be more aggressive and do not present any molecular marker.and HER-2 overexpressed cancers, while also more aggressive and potentially metastatic (Yersal & Barutca, 2014). All these molecular subtypes are connected to the expression of cellular growth factors that affect the tumors proliferative capacity, fitness and persistence. This study was an observational study that was carried out using a cross sectional study examined VEGF-A expression and molecular marker (ER, PR and HER2) of breast cancer tissue using immunohistochemistry (lHC), VEGF-A do not show any significant correlation with demographic characteristics, TNM staging, pathological grading, luminal or non luminal typing, or hormonal receptor markers, but show a significant positive correlation with HER-2 receptor, (p = 0.036). VEGF-A is positively correlated with HER-2 expression in breast tumor tissue, but do not show significant correlation with other breast cancer markers, including luminal typing or hormonal receptor. Further study needs to be conducted to understand the mechanistic interplay between FEGF and HER-2 in breast cancer pathogenesis.
