BACKGROUNDː Insulin resistance is when a person gains weight and accumulates fat. Metabolic syndrome refers to a group of closely connected medical conditions. The aim of this study is to compare NCEP-ATP III criteria and IDF criteria to predict insulin resistance incidence in young adults with metabolic syndrome.
METHODSː A cross-sectional study with 99 subjects aged between 25-40 years who were not pregnant and did not have diabetes mellitus. Those with diabetes were excluded from the study. The study utilized the HOMA-IR cut-off at 2.03 in the third tertile. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Chi-Square tests.
RESULTSː Subjects with central obesity 77 (77,8%); elevated fasting blood glucose 6 (6,1%); elevated triglyceride 81 (81,8%); decreased HDL 20 (20,2%); and insulin resistance with HOMA-IR cut-off 2,03 is 33 (33,3%). NCEP-ATP III and IDF revealed that 10 (30,3% and 21 (63,6%) had insulin resistance respectively. NCEP-ATP III found that young adults with insulin resistance had a 28.3 times greater risk than IDF, which only found 7.9 times for developing metabolic syndrome.
CONCLUSIONSː NCEP-ATP III criteria were more effective in predicting insulin resistance compared to IDF criteria in young adults with metabolic syndrome.
