Abstract (Abstrak)

Jatropha curcas and Carica papaya leaves are known as traditional medicines and will be developed as photosensitizer agents in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) or photoinactivation. The chlorophyll content from both leaves has great potential because they are more available, easy to produce, and high level of purity, excited in the triplet state by a long lifetime so it is very likely to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) compounds. This study examines the potential of two plants that contain antimicrobial substances and their characteristics of light absorption and then was validated by their inhibiting when applied to the photoinactivation system of the Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm. The analysis including absorption spectrum profiles and XRF characteristics, the percent inactivation and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). The results showed that with the use of castor leaf extract, the optimal inhibition value was 65.55% while the use of papaya leaf extract was 46.63%. From the results of the MDA test, it was obtained that the Jatropha leaf extract was 0.376 nmol/mL. This indicates that the extracts of castor leaf and papaya leaf have the potential to be used as photosensitizer agents in the photoinactivation biofilm of S. epidermidis.
