Abstract (Abstrak)

The local wisdom is reflected in the technology of building and managing the settlement. Ammatoa Kajang is a traditional settlement rich with their local wisdom, the community maintains the rituals, traditions and cultures ever since the settlement established. The location of this research is at Ammatoa Kajang in Bulukumba, province of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to get descriptive-ideographic pictures on the spatial pattern of highland settlements of Ammatoa Kajang and the reflection of its local wisdom. The study was conducted with a qualitative-naturalistic approach. The results of the study showed that the design of settlement spreads due to the tradition of the community in building houses to choose a location close to the rice fields or the agricultural fields, making it easy to reach the area to work as farmers. The Ammatoa Kajang community consistently upholds the guidance from their ancestors to live simple and unpretentious ways, with a philosophy of life to place the universe, human beings and the forests/environments in separable as a one preserve and balance the ecosystem.
