ABSTRACT
IKA DIAN SAPUTRI. “Psycological Disorder In The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart And The Fall Of The House Of Usher By Edgar Allan Poe”supervised by MuhammadSyafriBadaruddinandRezkyRamadhani
The thesis is a research about the psychological disorders of the main character in the short story The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart And The Fall Of The House Of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe using the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freuds perspective on Id, Ego, Super-ego. The objectives of this study are (1) To identify deviant behavior by the main characters in the short story The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart And The Fall Of The House Of Usher (2) To show psychological disorders that affect the main characters in the short story The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart And The Fall Of The House Of Usher.
The method in this research is descriptive qualitative method, which is analyzed in the form of descriptions, not numbers or coefficients of the relationship between variables. The object and data source of this research is the short story The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart And The Fall Of The House Of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe published in 1843 and 1840 and consists of 12,6,23 pages. The data analysis technique in this study uses a theory in accordance with the principles of data analysis techniques based on the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud.
The writer presents the psychological disorder of this research which contained in the selected short stories by Edgar Allan Poe has a similarity where the main character in each short story has a mental illness. First, when the main character killed his wife. Second, the main character killed The Old Man whose he irritated. And the last, when Roderick Usher bury his sister who was still alive, due to the effect of his mental disorder.As for, the effect of deviant behaviors the main character’s attitude in each short stories are different. First, the main character felt panic and scared if his action was getting caught. Second, the main character was getting hallucination after killed The Old Man, so he reveals his crime. Last, Roderick Usher was getting hallucination and his illness was getting worse after the thing that he did.
