Abstract (Abstrak)

Optimalisation on management of small islands can be initiated from its potential resources, such the reef fishes. There were 6 islands in 3 archipelagos of different regencies in South Sulawesi observed as the objects for applying the management concept from the study of reef fish. They were Nambulaki and Tambolongan islands in Selayar Archipelago; Batang Lampe and Kambuno islands in Sembilan Archipelago, Sinjai; and Sabangko and Sagara island of Spermonde Archipelago, Pangkep. The observation was performed in October-November 2000, applying line transect and free sampling for target and indicator reef fish groups. Suggestions were put forward in term of reef fish’s management on small islands. Preservation zone should be applied in Nambulaki Island for its existing nature reserve and highly abundance of fish species, and Kambuno Island for its recovery from high fishing pressure. Conservation zone with certain management such ecotourism and environmentally fishing device could be applied to the rest islands.
