Abstract (Abstrak)
According to their usage and ecological aspect, there are 3 groups of reef fishes, i.e. target, indicator and major groups. The need for its proper management lead to perform the species indices of reef fishes, especially in the conservation area of Takabonerate Marine National Park, South Sulawesi. There were 14 sites selected purposively and data collected during July 2000. A 100 m transect line was set up for visual census at 3 and 10 m depths. A series of species indices such species diversity, evenness and dominance as well as species composition was computed and analyzed. The result showed the ratio between groups was 4 : 1 : 9 (target, indicator and major). The average abundance of each site was 8 – 25 ind/10 m2 . Species composition of target and indicator groups was higher at 10 m than 3 m, but major species showed uniform variation. Species indices were discussed each in term of derived-categories.
