Abstract (Abstrak)

Introduction : Periodontal disease is one of the dental and oral health problems with a high prevalence rate in the world. Periodontal disease attacks periodontal tissues such as gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. To accelerate wound healing and regenerate bone, regenerative materials are needed. Chitosan is a biomaterial that can support the process of wound healing and bone regeneration. Objectives: To determine the benefits of chitosan in the regeneration of alveolar bone due to periodontal disease in dentistry. Methods: The research design is a literature review, which comes from online research journals such as: Pubmed, Google Scholar, ELSEVIER, and other relevant sources. Results: Based on 10 studies, concluded the use of chitosan as an anti-ix nflammatory agent can be an accelerator in the wound healing process by increasing inflammatory cells such as macrophages, PMN cells, osteoblasts, and fibroblasts. Conclusion: Chitosan in bone regeneration, the use would be more effective when combined with polymer molecules/ biomaterials/ bioactives to improve the results of mechanical characteristics, protein absorption, and biomineralization of chitosan.
