Abstract (Abstrak)

Terapi diberikan selama 7 hari, kemudian dinilai kadar hemoglobin, retikulosit, Ret-He, dan RDW-SD antar kedua kelompok.

Background : Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast type probiotic which research is recently starting to develop to determine its effect on various diseases and is expected to be a potential solution in overcoming iron deficiency.
Objective : The aim of this study to assest the efficacy of the probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii in of children with iron deficiency therapy.
Methods : The study design was a randomized control trial (RCT), double blind. The study was conducted on 400 children aged 1-18 years in 15 orphanage in the city of Makassar.
Result : A total of 94 children with iron deficiency were randomized into 2 groups. Fourty-six children received placebo with standard therapy, whereas the other 48 received S. boulardii with standard therapy. Therapy was given for 7 days, then assessed hemoglobin, reticulocyte, Ret-He, and RDW-SD levels between the two groups. Ret-He value in the S. boulardii group were higher than the control group with p = 0.037 (p < 0.05). However, hemoglobin, reticulocytes, and RDW-SD values in the S. boulardii group were lower than in the control group (p = 0.535, p = 0.914, p = 0.433, respectively). There was no significant difference in the difference in hemoglobin, reticulocyte, Ret-He, and RDW-SD levels between the placebo and S. boulardii groups.
Conclusion : Children with iron deficiency receiving S. Boulardii with standard therapy for 7 days show higher Ret-He levels than those receiving placebo with standard therapy.
